Bergues, France to Ypres, Belgium

6th April 2019

A short drive today from Bergues to Ypres took us along some concrete rural roads, through some pretty villages and farmers fields.

Ypres is our only planned and booked stop of the tour, Menin Gate and the Last Post Ceremony are very popular so the aire and campsite often fill up so we booked this site a while back. We arrived at the site before lunch to make the most of it.

The site itself is a full campsite and for €15 you can stay in the Motorhome pitches/ aire with use of the toilet block and electric. The town is a 10 minute walk away so easy to pop in and out which is what we did.

After lunch in our vans we headed to town to take a look about, we wondered round the shops and enjoyed the tourist sights until a refreshment stop was required. A nice cafe in the sunshine serving Belgium waffles right in the centre proved a good choice. With 9% Belgium beer and massive waffles we sat watching people for a while.

Not expecting to get the Grand National on any pub TVs we popped back to our vans. We watch all my horses lose but thankfully not fall and then had dinner before setting back off to town for the Last Post Ceremony.

A very somber, moving Last Post Ceremony was attended by a huge crowd and this time had singers from a British choir but it was nowhere near as long as our previous visit last year. Our legs were grateful of this.

After the Ceremony we had a drink in an Irish pub which was full of Brits then we headed back to the vans, a brief trip to Ypres but a good stopover.
